What Happens To The Body After Putting on Nail Polish?

Every woman want to have her nail done, manicured, trimmed and polished do perfection and we do this on a daily basis. Choosing a nail polish color is one of our favorite things and we can spend hours just tending to our manicure. However, this habit of using nail polish can actually be detrimental for our health and we should be careful with the type of nail polish we use as some of the most popular ones in the US are quite dangerous.

The Study that Revealed Nail Polish is Dangerous

The study included 24 women who were just instructed to apply their favorite brand of nail polish and they would do the rest. The researchers conducted several tests to see what kind of ingredients companies add to the nail polish we use and how these affect our health. As it turns out every single one of the women showed traces of toxins in their body after applying the nail polish. The traces were there even up to 10 hours after application and one of the chemicals they discovered was triphenyl phosphate.

A different study revealed the same chemical was present in 8 out of the 10 different nail polish brands they tested. 2 of the nail polish brands didn’t even list triphenyl phosphate on the label, which is terrifying.

What is Triphenyl Phosphate and what does it do to our body?

TPHP or Triphenyl Phosphate is an extremely dangerous chemical which disrupts the function of our endocrine system and manipulates our hormone levels. It may interfere with hormone regulation, development, reproduction and metabolism.

What’s even more terrifying is that young girls use nail polish all the time and this chemical is especially dangerous for girl in such a young age. Disrupting their hormonal balance can have detrimental effects. The chemical is also a:

  • Neurotoxin
  • Endocrine toxin
  • Reproductive toxin
  • Allergen
  • Skin irritant

Additional health concerns

Aside from Triphenyl Phosphate, nail polishes were discovered to contain formaldehyde, toluene and dibutyl phthalate. Formaldehyde is an air and water dissolving carcinogen that can cause asthma, breathing difficulties and sore throat. People with chronic conditions should be especially careful as they are more prone to be poisoned by this chemical. Toluene can disrupt the normal development in children and can irritate the skin as well. And finally, Dibutyl Phthalate is similar to Triphenyl Phospate, it has a detreimental effect on our endocrine and reproductive system.
