Sebaceous cysts appear when your sebaceous glands get blocked by keratin, a form of protein which is an integral part of your hair, nails and skin. Their appearance on the skin is not alarming, even though their name might suggest otherwise, they are benign cysts which shouldn’t cause a concern. This means that even though they might look worrisome they’re not cancerous so your life isn’t in danger.
Why do they form in the first place?
Well, there are a number of reasons why your sebaceous glands get inflamed and clogged by keratin, such as excessive sun exposure, skin trauma, waxing or shaving, some hormonal imbalances etc.
Sebaceous cysts aren’t usually painful but they can cause redness and inflammation on the surrounding skin and feel warm to the touch. They can be small or big, with sizes anywhere from a quarter inch to a few inches in diameter. And they’re known to fill up with gooey, smelly substances from time to time, which is kind of gross, don’t you think?
The first thing that crosses anyone’s mind when they see this kind of cyst is to pop it instantly but they shouldn’t be popped because you risk an infection and further complications from a harmless thing just because you couldn’t resist the temptation. They shouldn’t be removed with a sharp object either, like a scalpel, which is why lancing isn’t recommended as a safe removal method as well.
So how should we get them removed?
In most cases, sebaceous cysts go away on their own, without any special treatment. When the inflammation subsides and the blockage is eliminated, these growths start to shrink bit by bit until they completely disappear.
But what if they don’t go away on their own?
Well, luckily for you there are a number of natural, home remedies that can help you in such a case. Below you can find the most effective ones:
Hot compresses can help you shrink sebaceous cysts because the heat will ease the drainage and they’ll soon subside. Fill a small glass jar with hot water (not scolding hot) and wrap it in a towel. Press the jar gently against the cyst and keep it like that for a few minutes.
Aloe Vera Gel
Aloe Vera gel is an all-purpose ingredient that can help even in the case of nasty sebaceous cysts. It’s especially beneficial against every kind of skin issue. Just rub a bit of aloe vera gel on the cysts a few times a day and you’ll soon notice them slowly disappearing.
Honey is another very beneficial ingredient that has proven extremely effective against skin problems. Just spread a little bit of honey directly on the cysts and let it stay for as long as you can before rinsing it off. The longer you keep it on your skin the better and the faster results you’ll get.
This spice has potent anti-inflammatory properties which will help you relieve the inflammation that caused the cyst in the first place. Just mix a bit of turmeric with a couple of drops of water to make a paste and apply it on the cysts. You can also try another approach, from within, by drinking a glass of warm milk and turmeric every night before going to bed.
Dip a cotton pad the size of the cyst in some ACV and place it over the cyst. Secure it with a bandage and repeat the procedure a few times a day.
Tea bags can also be used to eliminate sebaceous cysts. Brew a batch of tea and use the bags while they’re still warm and moist. Place them over the growth and secure them in place with a bandage. Leave them on for a while and let them do their magic.
Prepare a warm bath and add a cup of Epsom salt in it. Soak in it and relax, just enjoy your me time. This solution is excellent if you have more sebaceous cysts on different parts of your body.
