Our body and mind need a regular, good night sleep, it’s vital for the proper function of every organ in our body. This time is needed for our body to rest and restore its strength, preparing for the day ahead. If one is unable to fall asleep, or wakes up throughout the time the body won’t be able to replenish its energy and we become susceptible to all kinds of health conditions.
According to the National Sleep Foundation, our age defines the number of sleeping hours required and it’s the most important factor. But it’s not just the sleeping time that counts, it’s the quality of that sleep that’s equally important. If we don’t get the necessary sleep quality, our entire health will be affected.
However, despite all of the recommendations, there are still people who are unable to fall asleep and struggle with sleep disorders which can be caused by a number of factors, including stress, unhealthy diet, excessive use of mobile phones, laptops and TVs and so on. Sleep disorders are directly linked to a number of health problems and if left untreated they can have serious consequences.
If your sleeping patters are irregular you’ll experience problems with concentration, chronic fatigue, appetite disorders and so on. The people who’re most affected by this are the ones that sleep less than 5 hours a night, they are at risk of cardiovascular disorders. Those who sleep less than 7 hours are at risk of becoming overweight and developing diabetes. New sleeping hours guidelines
The Harvard professor, Charles Czeisler conducted a research which lasted from 2004 to 2014 and was able to determine the proper sleeping hours recommended for every age group and came up with the following guidelines:
Newborn babies, age 0 to 3 months need to sleep between 14-17 hours per night
Babies age 4 to 11 months need to sleep between 12-15 hours per night
Children from 1 – 2 years of age need to sleep between 11-14 hours per night
Preschool children from 3 to 5 years of age need to sleep between 10-13 hours per night
School age children age 6 to 13 years need to sleep between 9-11 hours per night
Teenagers from 14 to 17 years need to sleep between 8 and 10 hours per night
Young adults from 18 to 25 years need to sleep between 7 and 9 hours per night
Adults age 26 to 64 need to sleep between 7 and 9 hours per night
Elderly people over 65 years of age need to sleep between 7 and 8 hours per night
