Turmeric is a spice that originates from India and Southwest Asia, popular for its culinary purposes and amazing health benefits. The spice is widely used in Asian cuisine thanks to its unique aroma and color, but it’s also popular as a herbal remedy with numerous medicinal uses and is highly effective in treating a number of health disorders.
Fresh turmeric is quite similar to ginger on the outside, but when you cut it you’ll see that the flesh is different in color. In the US we mostly use powdered turmeric and we all know it as a peppery spice with a unique color and aroma.
Turmeric has a rich nutritional profile, it’s low in calories and has a relatively low GI. The spice is abundant in minerals and vitamins, including manganese, calcium, magnesium, copper, potassium, vitamins A, B, C and D. To be more specific, just 2tbsp. of turmeric contain 8mg of calcium, 2mg of iron, 12mg of phosphorus, 8,5 mg of magnesium, 111mg of potassium and 2mg of sodium. The vitamin content is also impressive, the same 2tbsp. contain 0,01mg of vitamin B2, 1mg of vitamin C, 2mg of folate, 0,23mg vitamin B3 and 2mg choline. Having this nutritional information in mind, it shouldn’t surprise us that turmeric is so miraculously health beneficial with properties ranging from increasing your antioxidant capacity, relieving pain, inhibiting free radicals damage, protecting from cancer and cardiovascular problems to treating arthritis and improving cognitive function.
According to a recent study published in a number of renowned journals there are even more exciting news about this Asian spice. It seems that this study was able to determine that turmeric can be used as a natural alternative to the pain-killer ibuprofen and with great results. Ibuprofen is widely used in treatment of knee osteoarthritis and now the study shows that turmeric is even more effective than the drug in treating this pain and is much safer as well.
Studies have shown that ibuprofen has a toxic effect on the heart, similar to the banned anti-inflammatory drug Vioxx, which was proven to cause cardiovascular complications with fatal consequences and was banned soon after. The results from the study show that we can switch to natural alternatives and forgo the harmful drug given that turmeric has proven to be more effective and safer for everyone.
The study examined the safety and efficiency of using turmeric in the treatment of patients suffering from knee osteoarthritis. The study involved 109 patients suffering from the disease which were following an ibuprofen treatment (800mg a day) or turmeric treatment (2000mg a day) for the duration of 6 weeks.
The study authors measured the pain levels of their subjects during activities like walking stairs and some basic functions of the knee during a 100m walk. They were able to determine that both treatments were effective in relieving the pain and had similar results in both treatments except for the 100m walk were turmeric was proven to be more effective. The group who took turmeric also reported fewer unwanted side-effects compared to the ibuprofen group. Even though the results were similar in both courses of treatment, it was notable that the turmeric group reported greater satisfaction and fewer to no side-effects, meaning that the turmeric treatment is a better treatment for this condition. This is great news for everyone and we can’t wait to see what the future will bring but it’ amazing to know that a natural spice like turmeric can have a greater effect on subsiding the pain than our go-to painkiller ibuprofen.
